Abattoir Rising documentary film shoot at Miles Smith Farm : Abattoir Rising is a documentary film currently in production. ABOUT THE FILM: While not pleasant to think about nor view, animals must be slaughtered in order to become food. The process involves stunning, bleeding out, and cutting the animal into parts. The local meat movement strives to embrace the truth about slaughter and respect it. Paul McCartney says “if slaughterhouses had glass walls everyone would be a vegetarian.” Contrarily, the film shows how making slaughter more transparent empowers the consumer with responsibility and knowledge that has been denied them since the consolidations prompted by industrial agriculture. Over the past three years, we have spoken with farmers and slaughterhouse workers about the lack of access to adequate processing facilities. We’ve also asked consumers about what they know and don’t know about the ways animals are processed for meat. Unfortunately, most are unaware of even the most basic facts about the way farm animals are raised and killed for food, both industrially and locally. Abattoir Rising does not take the stance of an “animal rights” or “environmentalist” film, although it is concerned with food safety and animal welfare. The film provides viewers with an honest look at the people, processes, and issues surrounding humane slaughter and local meat farming, allowing them to arrive at their own conclusions about the people who humanely raise animals for meat and the process of bringing meat to market.
